Penbriar deals privately in the secondary market for important modern, post-war and contemporary art, buying and selling on its own account and by private treaty. The firm handles works by artists including Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter and Yayoi Kusama, and buys selectively with a view to owning works it believes in.
Acquisitions
Works are acquired from private collections, dealers and at auction in London, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and other major art markets. Penbriar buys selectively, focusing on works it considers significant in quality, provenance and market standing rather than simply what is available at any given moment.
Private Sales
Works are offered privately to collectors, families and institutions without the public process of an auction sale. Where an owner is considering selling, Penbriar may acquire the work directly. In other cases, the firm can handle a sale on the owner’s behalf where the work and circumstances are appropriate.
Private treaty allows transactions to be conducted discreetly and directly, with the terms agreed between the parties rather than through a public saleroom process.
Provenance & Condition
Before acquiring or offering a work, Penbriar examines its title, provenance, exhibition history, literature and condition, including any known restoration or conservation. Penbriar discloses relevant findings to prospective buyers as part of the transaction process.
Attribution and authenticity are matters of scholarship and evidence. Penbriar approaches both with appropriate diligence and, where necessary, specialist or external expertise.
